Preface

Most lives get edited down to one chapter. Mine refused. The stage came first, at age ten, in the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera House, and everything since has been a variation on the same theme: learn the craft properly, do it nightly, and let each discipline teach the others.

The performer's ear tuned the voiceover. The touring life built the operations discipline. The vocal training became the coaching. The border crossings became a guide for other people's crossings. Five chapters, one author.
