The crest is the Greek heritage: Athena’s little owl, the sign of Athens since antiquity, which hunts by day as well as by night and so keeps watch in both. It stands on the torse, twisted in the red, white, and blue of the arms below.
The coat of arms is parted Swiss red and Greek blue, the layout of Ticino, under the white cross that Switzerland and Greece share; red, white, and blue together carry the United States. At the crossing burns the one gold element, the flame of the kandili, the lamp the family is named for and the faith at the heart of every heritage the shield joins.
The supporters are the Italian heritage: olive and oak rising from one knot, as they wrap the emblem of the Italian Republic. The olive is Puglia’s tree and Athena’s gift, and its oil is what burns in a kandili, so the branch of peace feeds the flame.
The mottoes say one thing in two tongues. Salvus · Sanus · Sanctus beneath the red, for Switzerland, the United States, and Italy; Αρτιος · Ακεραιος · Αγιος beneath the blue, for Greece. Whole in body, sound in mind, holy in spirit: whole, wholesome, and holy, the guiding virtues of the family.
